It is one of the several Benedictine monasteries
founded in the XI century by the counts' families, in this case by the
Ardengheschi. The cenoby went under the protection of the marquis of
Tuscany Corrado and during the XII century got the control on many churches
of the zone, among whom also the Civitella castle's one.
Afterwards there was a time of decadence which
ended with its annexation to the Agostiniani order from Siena in 1446.
Nowadays you may see only a part of the Romanesque church, originally
a three naves one, in the interesting façade with projecting
portal. The façade is framed by two carved capitals columns:
the right one representing two felines with a single head, a decoration
similar to a sculpture in the façade of Sant'Antimo monastery.
