Santa Maria Church recorded since 1188, the church has
a tabernacle-shaped stone façade with a single portal overtopped
by a round arch. Two rectangular windows with a circular one in between,
added in 19th century, give the façade a graceful motion. The
interior has a Latin cross plan, and has been deeply modified during
the early19th century restoration: the only surviving ancient features
are the raised transept, roofed with wooden beams, and the presbytery
with its cross-vaulted lady chapel, flanked by two apsidioles where
there are Baroque altars. The frescoes of the central chapel, by late14th
century Siennese masters (Cristoforo di Bindoccio e Meo di Pero), are
partially concealed by several wall paint layers. Some remains of 15th
century mural paintings have been recently found in the right chapel. Monastery San Benedetto alla Nave is located on the slope of Mount Leoni, this monastery abolished in 1751 is today a private property and used as a farm. Of the church, by now in ruins, are left only the exterior walls. In the early years of 14th century the monastery was used as a shelter by some friars, followers of Brother Dolcino in flight from France and persecuted as heretics here too by the Blessed Thomas of Scarlino, who banished them from the area, and even by the people of the village nearby. Originally the monastery belonged to the Benedictine order, and was given in 15th century to the Minorite Observant friars. On all sides, hidden by the vegetation, there are ruins, roman fountain, ancient farms. Pagina 1 - 2 Download Campagnatico
