A large number of extremely interesting sites are within
easy reach of the Casa Olivo farm holidays. In half an hour, guests
can visit the lovely seaside village of
Castiglione della Pescaia
and the magnificent Punta Ala bay nearby.
The
Diaccia Botrona Natural Reserve
is a humid area and is one of most important in Europe. It spreads for
about 70 hectares between Castiglione della Pescaia and
Grosseto, towards
the sea is limited by pine-forest. It's what remains of the ancient
Lake Prile that used to take up about 50 square Km. and was reclaimed
by land fill in the middle of nineteenth century. Now is a protected
area that needs to be brought aut and preserved as it's the habitat
of many birds, migrators and not, that altenate all year round. In summer,
there are splendid boat trips, from Castiglione della Pescaia or the
Argentario peninsula, to the
Tuscan Archipelago
National Park and the islands of Giglio, Giannutri, Elba and Pianosa.
Montalcino and its renowned Brunello vineyards are 20 minutes away.
Or guests can visit Montepulciano,
Amiata Mount, this extinct
volcano, Pienza and the lovely
Val d'Orcia and
Sant'Antimo Abbey,
San Galgano Abbey.
Other marvellous itineraries will enable guests to discover
the Etruscans: the city of
Roselle (are 10 minutes away),
also with later Roman remains and an attractive amphitheatre, the Museo
Nazionale Etrusco in Grosseto, and the necropolises of Sovana, Vulci,
Tarquinia, Vetulonia and Populonia. Other itineraries: Pitigliano and
Vie Cave, Scansano, Magliano
in Tuscany and
San Bruzio Romanic Church.
Roselle, one of the main Etruscan towns, is situaded in the middle of
a large archaeological area that includes ruins that belong to the Etruscan
period, but has well Roman and Mediaeval remains. It was founded in
the eight century B.C. and had its largest development in the following
century. The celebrated thermal baths at Saturnia are 40 minutes away.
There are other attractive spas at Bagno Vignoni and Bagni San Filippo,
as well as natural spas in the Valle del Farma and at
Petriolo Thermal Baths and
Ardenghesca Abbey. Other
"must-see" places are Siena, Florence, Arezzo,
Massa Marittima, San
Gimignano and Volterra, and of course the Maremma natural park and the
WWF nature reserves at Orbetello and Capalbio. The
Natural Park of Maremma
takes up the southern part of the Commune of Grosseto's coast. Delightful
and charming, it offers an uncontaminated and natural setting, which
is often wild and rich of different ecosystems. Its territory can be
divided in an area situated north of the river Ombrone, la Padule della
Trappola, and an area south of the same river, whose caracteristic are
the Mountains of Uccellina and very beautiful
San Rabano Abbey. The firs
area which is flat and has marches, water pools, littoral dunes and
scarce vegetation, in its proximity you can see, especially in winter,
a lot of aquatic birds, cattle amd wild horses of the Maremma. The Mountains'
vegetation it's mainly made up of Mediterranean bush, where you can
find wild boars, fallow deer, roe deer, porcupines and foxes.
